FSTEL

From one student question to an innovation ecosystem: FSTEL is raising RM300,000 to scale access, AI learning, mentorship, and international competition opportunities for students across Malaysia.

FSTEL โ€” From One Student Question to an Innovation Ecosystem

What happens when students are given:

  1. access,
  2. mentorship,
  3. technology,
  4. and the opportunity to build?

FSTEL began with a simple question from a student at SMK Tebakang:

โ€œCan you teach us IT and business?โ€

That one question became:

ACCESS

๐Ÿ“ SK Jenderam Hilir

FSTEL started with a simple belief:

innovation cannot happen without access.

The journey began by sponsoring and upgrading the school computer lab at SK Jenderam Hilir to improve access to technology and digital learning opportunities.

THE STUDENTS ARRIVED

๐Ÿ“ SMK Tebakang, Serian, Sarawak

In 2025, during the first year as a Teach For Malaysia Fellow, a student Googled the mentorโ€™s background and asked:

โ€œCan you teach us IT and business?โ€

She was challenged to recruit:

10 students from each class

She recruited:

80 students

The first active cohort eventually became:

40 students

FSTEL 002 was never designed as a formal programme.

It grew because students themselves wanted to learn, experiment, build, and create opportunities together.

BUILDING WITH AI

4 Laptops. Bigger Dreams.

FSTEL grassroots fundraising collected:

RM1760

This funded:

4 laptops

capable of supporting Generative AI tools.

From those 4 laptops, students began learning:

  1. prompt engineering
  2. AI-assisted research
  3. website development
  4. entrepreneurship
  5. poster & product creation
  6. innovation pitching

Students from Sarawak started building websites within minutes.

FROM LEARNERS TO BUILDERS

The FSTEL Ecosystem

FSTEL evolved into:

an ecosystem

Today, the ecosystem includes:

โœ… Student Innovation Track

โœ… Teacher Facilitator Track

โœ… Community Collaboration Track

โœ… University Internship Track

โœ… Publication for Student Authors (P4SA)

โœ… Startup & Project Ecosystem

โœ… Innovation Competitions

โœ… AI & Future Skills Learning

The ecosystem is designed to help students:

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS BUILDING THE ECOSYSTEM

The FSTEL Platform itself is currently being developed by:

3 UNIMAS students

through:

FSTEL UniTrack

Milestone-Based Internship

The UniTrack students are helping build:

  1. the FSTEL Virtual Platform
  2. project showcase systems
  3. ecosystem infrastructure
  4. fundraising tools

One student is currently building:

FundFlow

โ€”a fundraising platform supporting impact-driven initiatives.

FROM IDEAS TO RESEARCH

In December 2025:

4 student groups

from SMK Tebakang received:

RM20,000

in grants from the Sarawak Research and Development Council.

Students who once had limited exposure to technology are now conducting innovation research and prototype development.
